Air Conditioning Repair in 5 Steps

When your Air Conditioning is not working properly, you can call a service man if you prefer not to deal with it, or you can troubleshoot your hvac equipment and see if you can fix it yourself!

Here are the Top 5 things you can check before spending money:

Coils

Keep an eye on the coils in the front of the air conditioner to make sure  they do not malfunction. If you see some frost forming on the condensing coils, this means that the air outside of the air conditioner is too low. The first thing you should do is turn the air conditioner off until the room heats up.

If the coils continue to be coated  with frost, it may mean that that the coils are dirty and can’t function properly . To remedy this, take off the front cover until you can see all of the coils. Use a soft bristle brush , clean off the debris.  If you don’t see any improvement, you should call a professional air conditioner repairman who will clean it more thoroughly.

Location

You probably want to analyze where the air conditioner has been placed in the room. If there isn’t  enough room behind it, there may not be sufficient air flow for the unit to work effectively. Make sure that there is at the very least  3.5 feet between the back of the air conditioner and any wall or obstruction. If there isn’t enough room,  try moving the air conditioner and see if that helps improve performance.

Positioning

Water will eventually pool in the bottom of your air conditioner, but if there is a puddle starting to form on the floor, it may mean that you need to re-position it.  Simply repositioning may mean that you will not need any hvac parts and no repair  is needed . Simply ensure that the unit is level by tipping it slightly backwards. You should see an end to the dripping water.

Plugs

Many air conditioning repair professionals say that the number one cause of an air conditioner malfunctioning, is a burnt cord plug. Air conditioners use a lot of electricity and this can lead to a burnt plug. Every now and then, it is a good idea to change the plug on the end of the power cord. Use caution if you plan to use an extension cord, as this is the number one reason for plugs becoming burnt.

Filter

Keeping your air conditioner filter clean can cut down on the number of repairs throughout the lifetime of a unit. Check the filter at least twice a month and clean it when needed. If the filter becomes blocked with dust and dirt, the air will not  circulate and the air is not as cool as usual. To clean your filter, take out the front grille by pulling upwards on the bottom. Remove the filter. If it needs to be cleaned, put it under a faucet of lukewarm water then let the filter drip dry. After it is completely dry, place it back in the air conditioner. In diy hvac repairs, changing your filter is one of the easiest ways to keep your A/C in tip top condition.

Air conditioning repair may not have to involve professionals if you take steps and perform a few easy maintenance procedures. With the simple steps above, you can keep your air conditioner running like new.
